The Clyncke Family — Maldegem to the USA
The Clyncke family represents one of the most extensive Maldegem migration networks in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Two main settlement areas emerge clearly: Boulder, Colorado and St Louis, Missouri.
Boulder, Colorado
One of the earlier arrivals was Andreas Clyncke (born 9 July 1872 in Maldegem), who departed in 1886 on the BELGENLAND, settling in Boulder.
He was followed by relatives including August Clyncke (born 10 Aug 1861, departed 1886, BELGENLAND) and Désiré Clyncke (born 25 Sep 1863, departed 1886, BELGENLAND).
A later wave includes Louis Clyncke (born 25 Apr 1859, departed 1895 on BELGENLAND and again 1902 on VADERLAND), and several arrivals in the early twentieth century on the KROONLAND (1921).
Naturalization records show multiple family members becoming U.S. citizens in Boulder between 1904 and 1922, confirming permanent settlement.
St Louis, Missouri
Parallel to the Colorado migration, another branch established itself in St Louis. Camiel Clyncke (born 8 June 1866) departed in 1892 on the FRIESLAND, with later returns and additional crossings in 1897 and 1900.
Hippolyte Clyncke (born 25 Feb 1868) departed in 1893 on the FRIESLAND, and again in 1901 on the KENSINGTON, heading to brother Camiel in St Louis.
These repeated voyages show not hesitation, but structured family expansion — each departure reinforcing an already existing anchor in Missouri.
Migration Pattern
From the first departures in 1886 to the continued arrivals into the 1920s, the Clyncke migration forms a clear timeline: Maldegem → early pioneers → siblings follow → naturalization → multi-generational settlement.
Hans-note
The Clyncke migration reads almost like a map unfolding — from one Maldegem household to entire neighbourhoods in Boulder and St Louis. What began as departure became community.
